RE: Anyone back a GL1800 into their toy haulers?

Take a look at the Master Lock, it has great reviews.

Chicken wire helps. I've also buried inflated balloons in holes.

RE: Honda CARB Compliant Generators

The difference isn't much, I think it's just the gas cap. But it is likely that non-CA dealers don't have CARB generators and the dealers willing to sell a non-CARB unit to you are betting on it not getting checked somewhere along the way. And yes, it is illegal to buy an non-CARB generator in California. It is not illegal to use one there, yet.

RE: Tire recommendation for Sprinter? (16 inch)

They're both boxy and white, I can see people's confusion.:?
I'm at 45K on my Michelin LTX A/S and my only problems with them has been traction on ice and loose gravel. Not much one can do about the latter through without springing $15,000 for the 4x4 install.

RE: New...really new tow vehicle

Don't expect any breakthroughs. It takes power to pull, so you need a big engine regardless. Take a look at the new hybrid trucks. Even with electric motors, batteries, brake regeneration & turning cylinders off, they still don't do very well.

RE: External Hard Drive??

I would go with the Western. USB-powered drives don't work on all systems (not enough power available) and a wall-powered disk will probably run at higher speeds. My external drive has both & I notice much higher transfer rates when I use the brick and ethernet.
Even cooler to spell it terabyte, like the pros.

RE: Diesel MPG in the South vs North?

Possibly, Based on four years of driving, I see a 8-9% reduction in winter driving mpg. The shift coincides with the change from summer to winter blends and doesn't seem to depend on actual temperatures.

RE: Buy a NEWER RV with MORE miles vs OLDER RV with FEWER miles?

The trade-off between a 2001 and a 1998 wouldn't be all that big, but lower miles generally means the unit sat unused most of the time. 40K in ten years means it was used occasionally, 80K in 7 years means it was used frequently.
A 10-12 year old RV can still be a good deal, but you really have to check them over.

RE: Downsizing

Old Boy Scout trick:
Take everything you had in your "A" and make three piles.
1. Things you used every day.
2. Things you used once or twice a trip.
3. Things you took along "just in case".
Pack Group 1 in your "B"
You won't miss Groups 2 & 3

I've only run into this in urban parking lots that cater to full-timers. And then, only twice.

RE: Theoretical Question about Toe In

Theory doesn't matter much when you have a a real-life example. For a front-wheel drive vehicle, the rear tires need toe-in so they will run straight when pulled. What is probably happening in your case is the lower toe-in tire is actually running with toe-out and that is causing the wear.

RE: So much for my MPG

A toad sits in the wind shadow of your RV, so it contributes very little to drag. As for the weight, it doesn't matter much unless you are doing mostly start'n'stop or climbing hills. There probably was a change, but under 0.1 mpg.

RE: Overnight - Why stuck on WalMart - think out of the box

Back in the '60's, my family was tenting. We hit a small town in Nebraska and asked around about camping. One of the local pastors was in the store & he not only gave us permission to pitch on the church grounds, but gave us the key to the church so we could use the bathrooms!
"Land of the free"? Getting upset because people in a town don't want you to use their parks for something other than what THEY are paying for is not an infringement on your rights. My old neighborhood had chronic problems with RV'rs in the park. Since the park was also the grade-school's playground ...

RE: Tire pressure confusion starting with Manufacturer

Since you are fairly certain the gap has changed, you should have the axle alignment checked. The tires are unlikely to have gotten bigger. Nothing will damage a trailer tire faster than the axle being mis-aligned. It's like the tire being dragged sideways constantly.

RE: "CMOS Battery Low" Message

Write down all of your CMOS settings that are not defaults (or all of them if you don't want to both figuring out which are not defaults). Older systems tended to have many manually set parameters. Also, although it's rare, the battery might be soldered into the board.

RE: Is maintenance a DYI or an all thumbs person?

I might add digital cameras are a great aid for DYI. A series of pictures as you dismantle something new cannot be beat when it's time to reassemble.
I've also found it handy when shopping for parts.
